This is my second cd recorder and this sony unit is fantastic. One thing for sure is you must read the instruction book before using it. The unit has many features such as simul-sync in normal or high speed which allows you to place a cd in the left carrier and record it to a cd in the right record bay. It has features that allow you to record different sequences of songs between one and 5 cd's. However you may have a longer silence between songs if you transfer to another cd. It also allows you to place tracks into a cd without creating a moment of between track silence. This is a great feature, you can also adjust the sensitivity of silence duration if you want the recorder to self track a cd (ie recording an lp and walking away from the unit). My favorite is the 20 bit map I use it when recording from an old reel 2 reel tape, it makes the sound just increadible! With the push of a button. You should only use "music cd-r or rw" and try not to record for greater than 76 min, the format may jam if you go to the full 80. Buy this and forget about the rest its more than enough!

I previously owned an ONKYO CD recorder, which crapped out on me in about a year of frequent use (preceded by a year of very infrequent use). When it died, and Onkyo no longer made such a device, I bought this one. The ONLY trouble I've had with this unit is in recording CDs from CD-RWs using the high-speed dubbing. Simple solution, use the regular speed dubbing when recording from CD-RWs and, no problems.

I've never had a CD stuck in the unit. The manual, though not well written, is not as absurd as some.

My only fear is that this unit, and Music CD recorders, may become obsolete.

I bought this for mastering multi-track recordings to CD. The alternative would have been to invest 1000.00 for an Alesis CD Mastering recorder. This was an alternative of less than 300.00. I do agree with some that it appears that Quality control has gone down a bit at Sony, but my system appears to have been manufactured in January 2006 and it worked flawlessly. Perhaps Sony has taken care of some issues.
My only negative is that it does not have RCA digital input and output, only optical. (This can be remedied by getting an inexpensive converter from Optical to RCA digital)
The key to understanding this system is that it records to a worldwide standard. Once you have the recording in a standard uncompressed format, then load it onto a PC and convert to whatever you want. For the money you can't beat the dubbing capability, and the addition of a 5 disk loader.

I've owned this two months and has done great! I love the 5 disc changer
where I can record off different discs un attended. It also does a great job of playing all my CDs, including my old ones, without skipping. It also does a great job of recording too. All in all a great unit! Great job Sony!

This is a neat unit - but you MUST read the booklet carefully. Not because the unit is complicated, it isn't, but because the booklet itself is a bit confusing in that it only says things once (the more important things, anyway). It talks about an amplifier but it really means source instead of tuner amp. And don't use data discs; use audio discs. Other than that, life is good. Mine has saved me a ton of money on transfers of children's and grandkid's little voices from long ago - from tape to CD. I expect to use it to transfer old LPs onto disc soon. A good buy.
- - - Ok, it's been over a week since I bought this thing and I've made about ninety discs of all my stuff, LPs included. I love it! Works slick!

The main reason I bought this machine, is because of it's recording features. There is only a few settings to have the machine ready for recording. Once it is set up; it only takes one minute to set it up; your all set to go. The display is easy to read including the recording levels. This machine is very easy to use! The machine turns out a very good recording; whether from tape, radio, records, or other cd's. Be sure to use digital audio discs, not data discs for computers! In my area they are hard to find. I am very impressed with this unit, at a reasonable price!
